Field Trip: Kennebunk Plains/Sanford Wastewater Lagoons

The 1,300-acre sandplain grasslands is home to breeding grassland species found almost nowhere else in the state such as grasshopper and vesper sparrows, upland sandpipers, and Eastern meadowlarks. The early successional stage of pitch pine barrens attracts warblers, buntings, and other forest edge species. The Sanford Lagoons is the most frequented birding spot in York County, and out of the 436 species of birds in Maine, about 230 have been spotted on the property. Field Trip: Scarborough Marsh

Scarborough Marsh encompasses Maine’s largest expanse of salt marsh. This trip we will seek those earliest of migrants, shorebirds from the Arctic tundra. Owned and managed by the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, the 3,100 acre estuary comprises tidal marsh, salt creeks, freshwater marsh, and uplands. Field Trip: Pine Point & Scarborough Marsh

Hopefully, we will find the second migrating shorebird wave with this double header. We'll be seeking sandpipers and plovers at this lure for shorebirds seeking to fatten up for the long flight south. These areas also offer fine viewing of waterfowl and wading birds. Pine Point is where the Scarborough River empties into the Atlantic ocean. Lobster Bake on Hog Island

Mid-Coast Audubon invites everyone to its annual lobster bake fundraiser at Hog Island Audubon camp with members of the Mid-Coast Audubon Board displaying their cooking talents and available to answer bird questions. A $50 per person donation covers boat transportation, a meal of a lobster, clams, potato, corn and onion, all baked over an open fire, plus lemonade, coffee and dessert, and the opportunity to explore the island before or after eating.
