SUMMARY:Field Trip: Pemaquid Point
DESCRIPTION:All are welcome! You don’t need to be an Audubon member or have advanced birding skills to join us. We simply hope to instill interest in the natural world through an understanding of how birds live and thrive in our area. \nFor early 2022\, we require that participants over the age of twelve be fully vaccinated against Covid-19. Participants are welcome to arrange carpooling among themselves\, but we will not meet at a central location beforehand. The trip leader will meet participants at the actual trip site.\n******************************************** \nVisiting Pemaquid Point is like going out to sea\, but without a boat. The peninsula is long and relatively narrow\, extending well out in the Atlantic ocean\, which explains why it is such a great place for viewing seabirds. Don Reimer will lead our trip\, and we’ll meet at the Pemaquid Point Lighthouse parking lot in Bristol at 8:00 am. There may be a parking fee. Participants should dress for cold and windy weather. Winter precipitation will result in cancellation. \nFrom the lighthouse\, expect to see Great Cormorants\, Black Guillemots\, Common Eiders and Longtailed Ducks. Previous trips have yielded Razorbills\, Purple Sandpipers\, Rough-legged Hawks\, Black-legged Kittiwakes and Iceland Gulls. eBird reports that 126 species have been seen at Pemaquid Point Lighthouse! We’ll be seeking sandpipers and plovers at this lure for shorebirds fattening up for the long flight south. This area also offers fine viewing of waterfowl and wading birds. Pine Point is where the Scarborough River empties into the Atlantic Ocean.  \nWe will meet at the Eastern Road parking area (Eastern Trail trailhead) at 8  am. We welcome birders of all skill levels. SUMMARY:Field Trip: Scarborough Marsh
DESCRIPTION:*We want to continue to honor the social distancing guidance\, which makes carpooling for this longer trip unwise.* \nScarborough Marsh encompasses Maine’s largest expanse of salt marsh. This trip we will seek those earliest of migrants\, shorebirds from the Arctic tundra\, and post-breeding wanderers. \nOwned and managed by the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife\, the 3\,100 acre estuary comprises tidal marsh\, salt creeks\, freshwater marsh\, and uplands. Waterfowl\, egrets\, herons\, glossy ibis and many species of shorebirds depend on this rich ecosystem for food\, a place to rest during migration\, and nesting habitat. The marsh is also an excellent spot to find a number of grassland songbirds not commonly found in other parts of Maine\, as well as various birds of prey that hunt in the marsh throughout the year. Muskrat\, mink\, otter\, and deer also frequent the wetland. \nWe will meet at the Eastern Road parking area (Eastern Trail trailhead) at 8 am. We welcome birders of all skill levels. We’ll be clearing blowdowns and branches from the trails that wend through magical mossy forest to river shores. Best enjoyed in winter when the ground is frozen and bugs not present.
