DESCRIPTION:All are welcome! You don’t need to be an Audubon member or have advanced birding skills to join us. We simply hope to instill interest in the natural world through an understanding of how birds live and thrive in our area. We require that participants over the age of twelve be fully vaccinated against Covid-19.\n******************************************** \nThe 1\,300-acre sandplain grasslands is home to breeding grassland species found almost nowhere else in the state such as Grasshopper and Vesper Sparrows\, Upland Sandpipers\, and Eastern Meadowlarks. The early successional stage of pitch pine barrens attracts warblers\, buntings\, and other forest edge species. \nThis trip is scheduled for a Thursday because  we will include a visit to the Sanford Sewage Treatment plant\, which is closed on the weekends. Known for attracting waterfowl\, this site boasts sightings of 251 species! \nFor those coming from the north who are interested in carpooling\, we will meet at the Damariscotta Hannaford parking lot at 6:30 am. Otherwise\, we will meet at the Kennebunk Service Plaza on Rt. 95 (southbound) at 8:00 AM. Whimbrel and American Oystercatchers will be target species.  Pine Point is where the Scarborough River empties into the Atlantic Ocean. \nOur intention is to be at Pine Point at 7:30 AM. Those wishing to carpool from the north will depart Damariscotta Hannaford’s at 5:45 AM. We’ll make additional stops at the Scarborough Marsh. \nWe welcome birders of all ages and skill levels. DESCRIPTION:Kirk Gentalen is the regional stewardship manager for mid-coast Maine for Maine Coast Heritage Trust and writes about the ecology of the area in his Nature Bummin’ blog. A self-described nature observer\, one of his passions is tracking wildlife especially in winter. He can read their tracks like the news and figure out what the critters have been up to. \nKirk takes care of MCHT conserved lands on Vinalhaven and North Haven islands. That means taking care of trail and forestry needs and monitoring easements. He connects with island residents through environmental education\, volunteering\, and outreach programs. He also compiles wildlife sightings on Vinalhaven in a most entertaining blog! \nJoin us for our monthly program on January 18 at 6:30 pm in person at the Camden Public Library\, or participate on Zoom in this hybrid program. SUMMARY:Welcome to the Pyrocene
DESCRIPTION:Ecological Implications for a Planet on Fire – \nPyrocene is a term used to describe the human use of fire and how it impacts our planet. The term was first coined in 2015 by Stephen Pyne of Arizona State University. Fire can be a friend or foe. This program will describe how humans first harnessed fire and eventually switched to burning fossil fuels. We will then discuss forest fire ecology\, zombie forests\, prescribed fire\, fire weather\, and related topics to better understand the ecological implications of a planet that seems to be on fire. \nThis will be a virtual presentation on Zoom presented in partnership with the Camden Public Library. You can register for the event here. \nDavid Govatski is a naturalist and author. He retired after working for the US Forest Service for over 30 years. He served as a fire management officer on a national interagency incident management team for eight years. David’s first job in the Forest Service was as a fire lookout on the Devil’s Head Lookout on the Pike National Forest in Colorado. He worked on the Redmond Hotshot firefighting crew on the Deschutes National Forest in Oregon and worked on numerous large forest fires\, including the 1988 Yellowstone Fires. He also worked on multiple prescribed fires in his career. David has maintained a strong personal interest in the study of fire ecology.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a late winter/early spring birding field trip in the Damariscotta Mills area. We will check the pools above and below the famous fish ladder and also look out over Great Salt Bay. Expect to see a good representation of our overwintering ducks including: Hooded\, Common and Red-breasted Mergansers\, Common Goldeneye\, and Bufflehead.  We’ll sort through them looking for less common species like Barrow’s Goldeneye\, Scaup\, and Ring-necked Duck. This is a great place to bird year-round and is worth a visit during the Alewife run in May. The Damariscotta Mills Fish Ladder eBird hotspot has reports of 147 species. \nJeff Cherry will lead the trip\, and all are welcome! DESCRIPTION:**New Date** \nJoin us for a journey in listening to wildlife audio recordings from Acadia and beyond\, and the stories of adventure and discovery behind them. Laura Sebastianelli is a naturalist with a passion for listening and sound recording. In 2017\, she established “Schoodic Notes: Bird Sounds of Acadia\,” a collaborative project with Schoodic Institute’s Bird Ecology program. Along with the help of a few other natural sound recordists\, the project has archived over 1200 recordings of Acadia’s birds. \nIn partnership with the Camden Public Library\, this will be a free online Zoom presentation starting at 6:30 pm. Use this link to register for this free event. \nLaura is also a seasoned educator and wildlife technician. She has long sought opportunities to empower others to develop their knowledge\, skills\, and experience to understand\, connect with\, and serve the natural world. She holds a Master of Science in Ecological Teaching and Learning from Lesley University in Cambridge\, MA. She created and ran natural and cultural history programs for adults and families through University of Maine Cooperative Extension at Tanglewood 4-H Camp and Learning Center\, the National Park Service\, and many other organizations. She has also conducted track surveys of Canada Lynx via snowmobile\, and howling surveys in search of Gray Wolf\, in Maine’s North Woods. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a unique opportunity to visit a remarkable salt marsh that is inaccessible to the public! We will primarily focus on observing Saltmarsh and Nelson’s Sparrows\, both of which regularly breed on this marsh. However\, due to the variety of habitats that we will cover\, we expect to find a wide assortment of songbirds\, woodpeckers\, raptors\, and many others. \nDue to the sensitive nature of this ecosystem and its species\, this field trip will be capped to 10 participants divided into two groups of 5. The first group will start at 7 am and the second group will start at 9 am. Come prepared to walk approximately 1 mile on wet\, swampy ground and to ascend/descend a steep unpaved trail to access the marsh. \nTo sign up\, please send an email to Mael Glon indicating your preferred time slot and how many people will be in your party. SUMMARY:Field Trip: Whale Watch & Puffin Pelagic
DESCRIPTION:Is that a buoy? Maybe a piece of flotsam? No\, it’s a Yellow-nosed Albatross! You never quite know what you’re going to find in the open ocean. Join trip leaders Mael Glon and Jeff Cherry as we embark with Cap’n Fish’s Cruises in search of puffins\, shearwaters\, storm-petrels\, and maybe even an albatross! \nJoin us on the July 6th Whale Watch & Puffin Combo Cruise that leaves from Boothbay Harbor at 1:30 pm and returns at 5:30 pm. After departing Boothbay Harbor\, the boat will sail to Eastern Egg Rock\, where you will see Atlantic Puffins\, Black Guillemots\, Common Terns\, Arctic Terns\, Roseate Terns\, and many others whizzing in all directions. After great looks at the island denizens\, the boat will sail offshore\, usually to a location where whales have recently been observed. \nEven though the cruise doesn’t leave until 1:30 pm\, we highly recommend that you arrive in Boothbay harbor by 12 pm. Paid parking is available in the vicinity of the dock\, but these spots fill up quickly so give yourself plenty of time! Even if you find a parking spot right away\, we’d like everyone to be at the dock by 12:30 pm so that we can get organized and have first dibs at the best viewing locations on the boat. \nIf you’ve never been on a pelagic\, we recommend that you do a little bit of research ahead of time to learn about proper attire\, ways to avoid seasickness\, and to become familiar with pelagic birds. We’ll also send out much more detailed advice and information as we get closer to the trip. \nWe are not capping the number on this trip\, but we still ask that you sign up by sending an email to Mael Glon so that he can provide updates and information. DESCRIPTION:Weskeag Marsh in South Thomaston is one of Maine’s best birding marshes. This 1\,300-acre complex features a mix of salt\, brackish\, and freshwater habitats\, including cattails\, grasses\, potholes\, and mud flats. The marsh is nourished by brooks\, streams\, and rivers\, and is bordered by forest\, scrubland\, and hayfields\, offering a diverse environment for birdwatching.  \nJoin us at this Knox County hotspot to witness the first wave of south-bound shorebirds. Meet at the parking lot on Buttermilk Lane in South Thomaston at 7:00 AM. If you have one\, we recommend bringing a spotting scope. \nDirections: From Route 1 in Thomaston\, turn onto Buttermilk Lane and in 0.8 miles look for the parking turnout at the marsh  (coordinates: 44.07916\, -69.14174). \nWe welcome birders of all ages and skill levels. A useful tool for birders\, nature enthusiasts\, travelers\, and anyone seeking to increase their knowledge\, experience\, and insight\, going beyond identification. \nThis program will be held in person at the Camden Public Library at 6:30 pm on Thursday\, November 21. \nChris Lewey\, Executive Director and Founder of RAVEN Interpretive Programs\, has led tours and programs for RAVEN\, as well as such organizations as the Maine Audubon Society\, Smithsonian Study Tours\, Road Scholar\, Tauck World Discovery and the National Wildlife Federation. Chris has taught ornithology for the National Audubon Society at their Hog Island ecology camp on the coast of Maine\, where he was the Director of their Joy of Birding and Breaking into Birding programs for many years. A native New Englander and licensed Maine Guide\, Chris is very much at home on the coast or in the mountains where his fascination with wildlife and conservation is enthusiastically shared.

SUMMARY:Climate Zero 54° N to 54° S by Bike
DESCRIPTION:Andre Breton’s ambitious bicycle journey began on September 11\, 2023\, in Cartwright\, Labrador\, Canada\, and ended 284 days later in Ushuaia\, Argentina. The primary goals of Climate Zero were twofold: to plant enough trees to zero out his 52-year carbon footprint and to ride a bicycle from 54° north to 54° south\, a complete transect of the Americas.  \nThis program will be held in person at the Camden Public Library at 6:30 pm on Thursday\, January 16\, 2025. \nClimate Zero was an opportunity for Andre to challenge himself and to raise awareness about the devastating implications of climate change. He demonstrated that everyone can make a positive difference in the global effort to reverse climate change. He will share some of his experiences and insights from living on a bike for most of a year. He hopes his story will inspire others to take action to address climate change.

However\, the level of confusion was much greater in the early 1800s\, when naturalists were struggling to classify all these birds for the first time. Some species were described to science over and over\, under different names\, while some other species were overlooked completely for decades. And for many years\, everyone underestimated the amazing migrations of these long-distance travelers. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a presentation by Maine Natural History Observatory ecologist\, Logan Parker\, focused on nightjar monitoring efforts in Maine. We will learn about the natural history of Maine’s nightjars (Eastern Whip-poor-will and Common Nighthawk)\, the threats they face\, and how you can take part in these exciting monitoring efforts. \nThis will be an in-person presentation at the Camden Library. \nThe Maine Nightjar Monitoring Project was launched in response to reports of widespread declines in Eastern Whip-poor-wills and Common Nighthawks throughout their eastern breeding ranges. Suspected declines in Maine evidenced by extensive anecdotal observations led to both the Eastern Whip-poor-will and Common Nighthawk being listed as a Species of Greatest Conservation Need in 2016.

DESCRIPTION:**DUE TO THE WEATHER FORECAST FOR TOMORROW\, SATURDAY\, WE ARE CANCELING THIS FIELD TRIP** \nClarry Hill is a hilltop blueberry barren and grassland in Union that attracts birds that prefer a wide open landscape. Most of the hilltop has been conserved by Midcoast Conservancy. This picturesque landscape has stunning views in all directions\, and provides significant habitat for a suite of uncommon grassland birds\, including Upland Sandpipers\, which have been listed as threatened by the state of Maine. Clarry Hill has been regionally renowned as a prime spot for birding for generations\, especially during migration season\, and nearly 150 species of birds have been observed here. \nToday\, we’ll be on the hunt for the elusive Vesper Sparrow. But that’s not all—we’ll keep our binoculars ready for raptors soaring overhead\, shorebirds on the move\, and any other early migrants making their spring debut.  \nYou don’t need to be an Audubon member or have advanced birding skills to join us. DESCRIPTION:Join us as we venture to Burkett Mill Preserve in search of Yellow-bellied Flycatcher\, Palm Warbler\, and other birds that are rare breeders in the mid-coast region! The 362-acre preserve owned by Midcoast Conservancy contains a mosaic of different natural communities\, with varying terrain of ledges and marshes. \nDue to limited parking at the preserve\, we will meet in advance to carpool. SUMMARY:Lobster Bake Fundraiser
DESCRIPTION:Thank you to everyone who bought tickets! We will see you on Hog Island on August 30! Your donation covers boat transportation\, a meal of a lobster\, fish chowder\, potato\, and corn-on-the-cob all baked over an open fire on the beach\, plus clams\, baked onion\, lemonade\, coffee and dessert\, and the opportunity to explore the island before or after eating. Don’t forget to BYOB (we will have lemonade\, coffee\, tea\, and water available).  \nThe boat will depart the Audubon dock\, at the end of Keene Neck Road in Bremen\, at 10 am (for those who wish to hike the island)\, and at 12 pm. Birdwatch\, take a hike\, swim\, watch our Board members build the fire and construct the lobster bake on the beach\, pick up a MCA hat or bird nest box\, or just beach comb around the island until 1 pm when the lobsters will be served. The boats will ferry guests back starting at 3:00 pm. And be sure to stay for the puffin parade!

SUMMARY:Field Trip: Rabbit Path at Power Line Crossing\, Alna
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we explore one of the Mid-Coast’s best-kept birding secrets! This location looks like many other power line right-of-ways\, but has a unique tendency to attract migrating warblers\, vireos\, and other songbirds in unbelievable numbers (see\, for example\, this eBird checklist). Timing is key\, but we’re hopeful for a warbler fallout\, which we’ve been fortunate to witness here in recent years. The trick is to arrive before dawn and be ready with binoculars in hand as migrating warblers fall out of the sky. In addition to warblers\, we’ll also be on the lookout for Philadelphia Vireo and Vesper Sparrow—both reliable sightings for this time of year and location. \nDirections: This hotspot doesn’t have an exact address\, but we recommend navigating to approximately 140 Rabbit Path Rd in Alna\, ME 04535\, or using the following coordinates: 44.11055\, -69.63681. Parking at this site is very limited and we are exploring other nearby parking locations\, but we recommend carpooling. Please also note that we may need to change the location of this field trip due to ongoing right-of-way maintenance along this stretch of power lines. \nWe welcome birders of all ages and skill levels. DESCRIPTION:We will have a table with information\, hats\, and bird houses at the Sept. 14 Wild Ones Native Plant Celebration & Plant Sale. This event is organized by Wild Ones of Midcoast Maine at the Camden Amphitheater from 9 am to 1 pm. \nFall is the perfect time to add some native plants to your garden. The weather is cooler\, but there’s plenty of time for them to put down new roots before winter. You’ll be improving the bird and pollinator habitat right where you live! \nThere will be several native plant growers there with amazing plants for sale\, as well as other similar nonprofits with lots of information to share.
