SUMMARY:Field Trip: Weskeag Marsh\, S. Thomaston
DESCRIPTION:Join us at this Knox County hotspot to witness the early wave of south-bound shorebirds. We are co-hosting with the Friends of Maine Coastal Islands NWR. We'll meet at the parking lot on Buttermilk Lane in South Thomaston at 7:00 AM. With two groups attending\, please carpool if that is an option. If you have one\, we recommend bringing a spotting scope. \nThis 1\,300-acre complex\, one of Maine’s best birding marshes located in South Thomaston\, features a mix of salt\, brackish\, and freshwater habitats\, including cattails\, grasses\, potholes\, and mud flats. The marsh is nourished by brooks\, streams\, and rivers\, and is bordered by forest\, scrubland\, and hayfields\, offering a diverse environment for birdwatching.  \nDirections: From Route 1 in Thomaston\, turn onto Buttermilk Lane and in 0.8 miles look for the parking turnout at the marsh  (coordinates: 44.07916\, -69.14174). \nWe welcome birders of all ages and skill levels. Your $85 donation covers boat transportation\, a meal of a lobster\, potato\, and corn-on-the-cob all baked over an open fire on the beach\, plus clams\, baked onion\, lemonade\, coffee and dessert\, and the opportunity to explore the island before or after eating. \n**THIS EVENT IS SOLD OUT**\nMid-Coast Audubon is grateful to everyone who bought tickets to its annual lobster bake fundraiser at Hog Island Audubon camp. We'll see you there for an unforgettable day! SUMMARY:Field Trip: Monhegan Island
DESCRIPTION:Monhegan Island during fall migration — need we say more? Lace up your walking shoes and join us for an unforgettable whirlwind tour of Monhegan Island\, located 10 miles off the coast of Maine. This renowned mid-coast migrant trap is a magnet for migrating warblers and other songbirds. We'll also spot hawks\, falcons\, shorebirds\, and many seabirds from the boat and shore. \nWe’ll be traveling to and from the island using the Monhegan Ferry which departs from Port Clyde at 7:00 AM and returns at 4:30 PM (the trip takes about one hour each way). Attendees must make their own ferry reservations in advance by calling the Monhegan Boat Line at (207) 372-8848 or reserving online. Please plan on meeting at the Monhegan Ferry dock in Port Clyde by 6:30 AM. \nPlan to walk about five miles while we are on the island. Food and drinks are available on the island\, but it can’t hurt to bring some snacks and water. We’ll plan to have a lunch break at The Novelty (good pizza and the only public bathrooms on the island). \nThis trip will be led by Alan Phipps and Jeff Cherry. We are capping this trip at 12 participants because the roads and trails on Monhegan Island are often packed with tourists and shuttles\, making it difficult to lead a big group. SUMMARY:Field Trip: Green Point Wildlife Area\, Dresden
DESCRIPTION:A former orchard and farm\, Green Point Wildlife Management Area in Dresden sits at the confluence of the Eastern and Kennebec Rivers. This midcoast birding hotspot hosts a variety of habitats including hayfields and an old orchard\, riverside floodplain forest\, wetlands\, and pine grove. We expect to see a wide variety of birds on this field trip such as Yellow-rumped Warblers\, Palm Warblers\, and Ruby-crowned Kinglets\, a variety of sparrows\, plus thrushes\, blackbirds and waterfowl. We recommend sturdy shoes and long pants\, and some blaze orange for this outing. \nBecause parking is very limited at the wildlife area\, we strongly recommend carpooling.  \nDirections: On Route 128 (aka River Road) in Dresden\, .8 mile north of the intersection of Indian Road and Route 128. There are two parking lots for Green Point. Examining the past\, present\, and future of our birds\, we will explore why some are adapting\, and some are not.  \nSteve HamptonJoin us for a Zoom presentation by Steve Hampton hosted in partnership with the Camden Public Library. He is an enrolled citizen of Cherokee Nation and has been birding since he was 7 years old. With a PhD in natural resource economics\, he worked for the California Department of Fish & Wildlife for 25 years\, where he was involved in oil spill response\, seabird restoration\, and coordination with Native communities. He currently serves as the Conservation Chair and CBC compiler for Rainshadow Bird Alliance in Port Townsend. His article in the December 2022 issue of Birding magazine summarized the scientific research on birds and climate change.

SUMMARY:Field Trip: Sabattus Pond
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a visit to Sabattus Pond as we look over the extensive flocks of south-bound ducks. Sabattus Pond is remarkable in autumn when water levels draw down\, exposing extensive mud flats and attracting large concentrations of migrating waterfowl. From October until freeze-up\, regulars include Mallards\, American Black Ducks\, Ruddy Ducks\, Hooded Mergansers\, Common Goldeneye\, Green-winged Teals\, American Wigeons\, Northern Pintails\, Ring-necked Ducks\, both species of scaup\, and American Coots. We often see some interesting songbirds\, and a few raptors. \nWe'll meet at the boat ramp at the south end at 8 am (524 Sabattus Road\, coordinates: 44.11911° N\, 70.09320° W). We typically stop at several sites around the pond to view the whole pond. Participants should dress warmly. \nThis trip will be led by Will Broussard. She is a former science teacher and environmental educator with degrees from The Conway School of Landscape Design and Antioch University New England. Kelly has years of experience communicating the complexities of the New England landscape to a variety of audiences to help people feel more connected to the world around them. She is a firm believer that our gardens\, no matter the size\, can contribute to a healthier\, more resilient world.

DESCRIPTION:For this early winter field trip\, we’ll brave the cold and venture back out to Salt Bay Farm. We’ll scope the Salt Bay for Barrow’s Goldeneye and carefully scan the hedgerows in search of Northern Shrikes. We should also see American Tree Sparrow\, finches\, and a variety of ducks. \nDirections: We’ll meet in the Coastal Rivers Salt Bay Farm parking lot located at 110 Belvedere Rd\, Damariscotta\, ME 04543. This property has a good amount of parking available\, but please consider carpooling if possible.
