SUMMARY:Field Trip: Scarborough Marsh
DESCRIPTION:*We want to continue to honor the social distancing guidance\, which makes carpooling for this longer trip unwise.* \nScarborough Marsh encompasses Maine’s largest expanse of salt marsh. This trip we will seek those earliest of migrants\, shorebirds from the Arctic tundra\, and post-breeding wanderers. \nOwned and managed by the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife\, the 3\,100 acre estuary comprises tidal marsh\, salt creeks\, freshwater marsh\, and uplands. Waterfowl\, egrets\, herons\, glossy ibis and many species of shorebirds depend on this rich ecosystem for food\, a place to rest during migration\, and nesting habitat. The marsh is also an excellent spot to find a number of grassland songbirds not commonly found in other parts of Maine\, as well as various birds of prey that hunt in the marsh throughout the year. Muskrat\, mink\, otter\, and deer also frequent the wetland. \nWe will meet at the Eastern Road parking area (Eastern Trail trailhead) at 8 am. We welcome birders of all skill levels. We’ll enjoy a nice lunch out together. For more information\, or in the event of inclement weather\, please call Trip Leader\, Dennis McKenna\, at (207) 563-8439 (home) or cell 207-522-2891.

SUMMARY:Field Trip: Pine Point & Environs
DESCRIPTION:*We want to continue to honor the social distancing guidance\, which makes carpooling for this longer trip unwise.* \nHopefully\, we will find the second migrating shorebird wave with this trip. We’ll be seeking sandpipers and plovers at this lure for shorebirds fattening up for the long flight south. This area also offers fine viewing of waterfowl and wading birds. Pine Point is where the Scarborough River empties into the Atlantic Ocean. \nWe will meet at the Eastern Road parking area (Eastern Trail trailhead) at 8 am. We welcome birders of all skill levels. We’ll enjoy a nice lunch out together. For more information\, or in the event of inclement weather\, please call Trip Leader\, Will Broussard\, at (207) 837-9520 (cell).

SUMMARY:Field Trip: Pemaquid Point
DESCRIPTION:All are welcome! You don’t need to be an Audubon member or have advanced birding skills to join us. We simply hope to instill interest in the natural world through an understanding of how birds live and thrive in our area. \nFor early 2022\, we require that participants over the age of twelve be fully vaccinated against Covid-19. Participants are welcome to arrange carpooling among themselves\, but we will not meet at a central location beforehand. The trip leader will meet participants at the actual trip site.\n******************************************** \nVisiting Pemaquid Point is like going out to sea\, but without a boat. The peninsula is long and relatively narrow\, extending well out in the Atlantic ocean\, which explains why it is such a great place for viewing seabirds. Don Reimer will lead our trip\, and we’ll meet at the Pemaquid Point Lighthouse parking lot in Bristol at 8:00 am. There may be a parking fee. Participants should dress for cold and windy weather. Winter precipitation will result in cancellation. \nFrom the lighthouse\, expect to see Great Cormorants\, Black Guillemots\, Common Eiders and Longtailed Ducks. Previous trips have yielded Razorbills\, Purple Sandpipers\, Rough-legged Hawks\, Black-legged Kittiwakes and Iceland Gulls. eBird reports that 126 species have been seen at Pemaquid Point Lighthouse! For more information\, or in the event of inclement weather\, please call Trip Leader\, Don Reimer\, at (207) 273-3146 (home) or cell (207) 701-1063.

DESCRIPTION:All are welcome! You don’t need to be an Audubon member or have advanced birding skills to join us. We simply hope to instill interest in the natural world through an understanding of how birds live and thrive in our area. We require that participants over the age of twelve be fully vaccinated against Covid-19.\n******************************************** \nReid State Park in Georgetown is characterized by a broad sandy beach\, dunes\, and coastal woodland. The tidal marsh of the Little River flanks the western border of the park\, and the mouth of Sheepscot Bay lies to the east. As many birders will attest\, this is a great spot to see Piping Plovers and Least Terns. The saltmarsh along the Little River and behind Mile Beach provide feeding habitat for Common and Least Terns\, and numerous species of herons and egrets. Previous trips to this beach have found newly arrived Purple Sandpipers\, Red-necked Grebes and all three Scoters. We’ll also be looking for early migrating songbirds in the adjacent forest. \nFor those coming from the north who are interested in carpooling\, we will meet at the Damariscotta Hannaford parking lot at 7:45 am. Otherwise\, we will meet at Reid State Park at 9 am. For more information\, or in the event of inclement weather\, please call Trip Leader\, Will Brussard\, at 207-837-9520 (cell).

SUMMARY:Field Trip: Pemaquid Point Thursdays
DESCRIPTION:All are welcome! You don’t need to be an Audubon member or have advanced birding skills to join us. We simply hope to instill interest in the natural world through an understanding of how birds live and thrive in our area. Continuing in 2023\, we require that participants over the age of twelve be fully vaccinated against Covid-19.\n********************************************* \nVisiting Pemaquid Point is like going out to sea\, but without a boat. The peninsula is long and relatively narrow\, extending well out in the Atlantic ocean\, which explains why it is such a great place for viewing seabirds. In spring\, it is often a stopover for migrants. eBird reports that 203 species have been seen on Pemaquid Point! \nWe’ll meet at the Pemaquid Point Lighthouse parking lot in Bristol at 7:00 am for a couple hours of birding. There may be a parking fee. For more information\, or in the event of inclement weather\, please call the Trip Leader\, Dennis McKenna at (207) 563-8439. \n

SUMMARY:Tracking Wildlife in Maine
DESCRIPTION:Kirk Gentalen is the regional stewardship manager for mid-coast Maine for Maine Coast Heritage Trust and writes about the ecology of the area in his Nature Bummin’ blog. A self-described nature observer\, one of his passions is tracking wildlife especially in winter. He can read their tracks like the news and figure out what the critters have been up to. \nKirk takes care of MCHT conserved lands on Vinalhaven and North Haven islands. That means taking care of trail and forestry needs and monitoring easements. He connects with island residents through environmental education\, volunteering\, and outreach programs. He also compiles wildlife sightings on Vinalhaven in a most entertaining blog! \nJoin us for our monthly program on January 18 at 6:30 pm in person at the Camden Public Library\, or participate on Zoom in this hybrid program. For Zoom\, you need to register in advance.

SUMMARY:Welcome to the Pyrocene
DESCRIPTION:Ecological Implications for a Planet on Fire – \nPyrocene is a term used to describe the human use of fire and how it impacts our planet. The term was first coined in 2015 by Stephen Pyne of Arizona State University. Fire can be a friend or foe. This program will describe how humans first harnessed fire and eventually switched to burning fossil fuels. We will then discuss forest fire ecology\, zombie forests\, prescribed fire\, fire weather\, and related topics to better understand the ecological implications of a planet that seems to be on fire. \nThis will be a virtual presentation on Zoom presented in partnership with the Camden Public Library. You can register for the event here. \nDavid Govatski is a naturalist and author. He retired after working for the US Forest Service for over 30 years. He served as a fire management officer on a national interagency incident management team for eight years. David’s first job in the Forest Service was as a fire lookout on the Devil’s Head Lookout on the Pike National Forest in Colorado. He worked on the Redmond Hotshot firefighting crew on the Deschutes National Forest in Oregon and worked on numerous large forest fires\, including the 1988 Yellowstone Fires. He also worked on multiple prescribed fires in his career. David has maintained a strong personal interest in the study of fire ecology.

SUMMARY:All About Screech Owls
DESCRIPTION:Screech owls are the owl most likely to nest in a backyard\, but few people know how to entice them to move in—or how to thwart those pesky squirrel interlopers. Jim Wright\, author of The Screech Owl Companion\, from Timber Press\, will tell all.  Jim thinks the photos alone are worth the price of this entertaining compendium\, but see for yourself. \nJoin us for this virtual Zoom presentation presented in partnership with Camden Public Library on February 20\, 2024 at 6 pm.  You can register for the event here. \nJim Wright is also the author of The Real James Bond\, a biography of the author and birdman who summered on Mount Desert Island and fell prey to the world’s most famous case of identity theft. The Wall Street Journal called it “slim and elegant” — like Bond himself. Jim’s other books include large-format books about Central America’s largest rainforest\, Pennsylvania’s legendary Hawk Mountain\, and the New Jersey Meadowlands.

We’ll sort through them looking for less common species like Barrow’s Goldeneye\, Scaup\, and Ring-necked Duck. This is a great place to bird year-round and is worth a visit during the Alewife run in May. The Damariscotta Mills Fish Ladder eBird hotspot has reports of 147 species. \nJeff Cherry will lead the trip\, and all are welcome! You don’t need to be an Audubon member or have advanced birding skills to join us. SUMMARY:Field Trip: Cloudmarch Salt Marsh\, Newcastle
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a unique opportunity to visit a remarkable salt marsh that is inaccessible to the public! We will primarily focus on observing Saltmarsh and Nelson’s Sparrows\, both of which regularly breed on this marsh. However\, due to the variety of habitats that we will cover\, we expect to find a wide assortment of songbirds\, woodpeckers\, raptors\, and many others. \nDue to the sensitive nature of this ecosystem and its species\, this field trip will be capped to 10 participants divided into two groups of 5. The first group will start at 7 am and the second group will start at 9 am. Come prepared to walk approximately 1 mile on wet\, swampy ground and to ascend/descend a steep unpaved trail to access the marsh. \nTo sign up\, please send an email to Mael Glon indicating your preferred time slot and how many people will be in your party. We will share the address and parking instructions with registrants. For more information\, please call trip leader Jeff Cherry\, at (914) 489-7870. Please note that if the weather is unfavorable on Saturday\, June 15\, we will move this field trip to Sunday\, June 16.

After great looks at the island denizens\, the boat will sail offshore\, usually to a location where whales have recently been observed. \nEven though the cruise doesn’t leave until 1:30 pm\, we highly recommend that you arrive in Boothbay harbor by 12 pm. Paid parking is available in the vicinity of the dock\, but these spots fill up quickly so give yourself plenty of time! Even if you find a parking spot right away\, we’d like everyone to be at the dock by 12:30 pm so that we can get organized and have first dibs at the best viewing locations on the boat. \nIf you’ve never been on a pelagic\, we recommend that you do a little bit of research ahead of time to learn about proper attire\, ways to avoid seasickness\, and to become familiar with pelagic birds. We’ll also send out much more detailed advice and information as we get closer to the trip. \nWe are not capping the number on this trip\, but we still ask that you sign up by sending an email to Mael Glon so that he can provide updates and information. Once you’ve signed up\, we highly recommend that you purchase your tickets ASAP by going to: https://www.boothbayboattrips.com/cruises/. Due to limited offerings of this particular cruise\, we are not scheduling a rain date.
