DESCRIPTION:All are welcome! You don’t need to be an Audubon member or have advanced birding skills to join us. We simply hope to instill interest in the natural world through an understanding of how birds live and thrive in our area. We require that participants over the age of twelve be fully vaccinated against Covid-19.\n******************************************** \nWe’ll be seeking the second wave of sandpipers and plovers at this consistent lure for shorebirds fattening up for the long flight south. This area also offers fine viewing of waterfowl and wading birds. Whimbrel and American Oystercatchers will be target species.  Pine Point is where the Scarborough River empties into the Atlantic Ocean. \nOur intention is to be at Pine Point at 7:30 AM. Those wishing to carpool from the north will depart Damariscotta Hannaford’s at 5:45 AM. We’ll make additional stops at the Scarborough Marsh. \nWe welcome birders of all ages and skill levels. SUMMARY:Field Trip: Kennebunk Plains/Sanford Lagoons
DESCRIPTION:All are welcome! You don’t need to be an Audubon member or have advanced birding skills to join us. We simply hope to instill interest in the natural world through an understanding of how birds live and thrive in our area. We require that participants over the age of twelve be fully vaccinated against Covid-19.\n******************************************** \nThe 1\,300-acre sandplain grasslands is home to breeding grassland species found almost nowhere else in the state such as Grasshopper and Vesper Sparrows\, Upland Sandpipers\, and Eastern Meadowlarks. The early successional stage of pitch pine barrens attracts warblers\, buntings\, and other forest edge species. \nThis trip is scheduled for a Thursday because  we will include a visit to the Sanford Sewage Treatment plant\, which is closed on the weekends. Known for attracting waterfowl\, this site boasts sightings of 251 species! \nFor those coming from the north who are interested in carpooling\, we will meet at the Damariscotta Hannaford parking lot at 6:30 am. Otherwise\, we will meet at the Kennebunk Service Plaza on Rt. 95 (southbound) at 8:00 AM. We require that participants over the age of twelve be fully vaccinated against Covid-19.\n******************************************** \nA visit to Belgrade Lakes offers a mix of fresh water and northern hardwood forest species with highlights including Black Terns\, Sandhill Cranes\, Purple Martins\, and many warbler species. For those coming from the midcoast area who are interested in carpooling\, we will meet at the Waldoboro Hannaford parking lot at 7 am. Otherwise\, meet at the Messalonskee Lake Boat Ramp on Route 27 at 8:00 AM. If you see Hammond Lumber on the left going north you have gone 300-400 yards too far. We’ll also make a stop to see a colony of Purple Martins. \nThe Bond Brook Recreation Area\, behind the Augusta airport\, has featured nesting Prairie Warblers for years. Of the 116 species seen at this site\, highlights include Prairie Warblers\, Field and Grasshopper Sparrows\, flycatchers\, and Brown Thrashers. \nWe’ll find a place to buy lunch along the way. We require that participants over the age of twelve be fully vaccinated against Covid-19.\n******************************************** \nEvergreen Cemetery and its surrounding 100-acre forest in Portland is a warbler haven in May\, with owls\, hawks\, ducks\, and herons possible at the ponds. We will continue to seek spring migrants at this\, historically\, one of our most successful field trips. Thrushes are vocal and common at this time of year. Capisic Pond is Portland’s largest freshwater pond and can turn up two species of orioles\, waterbirds\, warblers and a variety of songbirds at this 18-acre site. \nFor those coming from the north who are interested in carpooling\, we will meet at the Damariscotta Hannaford parking lot at 6:30 am. Otherwise\, we will meet at the back parking area at Evergreen Cemetery\, near the north end of the duck pond (dropped pin on Google Maps)\, at 8 am. SUMMARY:Field Trip: South Coastal Area of Maine
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we focus on the Ogunquit area and north including the Cliff Walk at Marginal Way and the Cliff House resort.  The Cliff House offers sweeping ocean views that make for wonderful sea birding. A footpath along the rocky shoreline near Perkins Cove offers extensive views where ducks and seabirds can be readily observed. We typically see Harlequin Ducks\, Purple Sandpipers and a variety of vociferous Scoters.  Dress warmly! \nWe will meet at the Perkins Cove parking lot (on Perkins Cove Road across from Barnacle Billy’s Seafood) at 8:30 am. We require that participants over the age of twelve be fully vaccinated against Covid-19.\n******************************************** \nFlorida Lake is new to our spring line up of field trips because we only recently discovered this birding gem. There are about 3 miles of trails through the 167-acres of differing habitats including emergent marsh\, shrub swamp\, forested wetland\, and wooded upland. We require that participants over the age of twelve be fully vaccinated against Covid-19.\n******************************************** \nReid State Park in Georgetown is characterized by a broad sandy beach\, dunes\, and coastal woodland. The tidal marsh of the Little River flanks the western border of the park\, and the mouth of Sheepscot Bay lies to the east. As many birders will attest\, this is a great spot to see Piping Plovers and Least Terns. The saltmarsh along the Little River and behind Mile Beach provide feeding habitat for Common and Least Terns\, and numerous species of herons and egrets. Previous trips to this beach have found newly arrived Purple Sandpipers\, Red-necked Grebes and all three Scoters.  We’ll also be looking for early migrating songbirds in the adjacent forest. \nFor those coming from the north who are interested in carpooling\, we will meet at the Damariscotta Hannaford parking lot at 7:45 am. A footpath along the rocky shoreline near Perkins Cove offers extensive views where ducks and seabirds can be readily observed. We typically see Harlequin Ducks\, Purple Sandpipers and a variety of vociferous Scoters.  Dress warmly! \nWe will meet at Perkins Cove at 8:30 am (stay tuned for an exact location). The peninsula is long and relatively narrow\, extending well out in the Atlantic ocean\, which explains why it is such a great place for viewing seabirds. Don Reimer will lead our trip\, and we’ll meet at the Pemaquid Point Lighthouse parking lot in Bristol at 8:00 am. There may be a parking fee. Participants should dress for cold and windy weather. Winter precipitation will result in cancellation. \nFrom the lighthouse\, expect to see Great Cormorants\, Black Guillemots\, Common Eiders and Longtailed Ducks. Previous trips have yielded Razorbills\, Purple Sandpipers\, Rough-legged Hawks\, Black-legged Kittiwakes and Iceland Gulls. eBird reports that 126 species have been seen at Pemaquid Point Lighthouse! DESCRIPTION:*We want to continue to honor the social distancing guidance\, which makes carpooling for this longer trip unwise.* \nScarborough Marsh encompasses Maine’s largest expanse of salt marsh. This trip we will seek those earliest of migrants\, shorebirds from the Arctic tundra\, and post-breeding wanderers. \nOwned and managed by the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife\, the 3\,100 acre estuary comprises tidal marsh\, salt creeks\, freshwater marsh\, and uplands. Waterfowl\, egrets\, herons\, glossy ibis and many species of shorebirds depend on this rich ecosystem for food\, a place to rest during migration\, and nesting habitat. The marsh is also an excellent spot to find a number of grassland songbirds not commonly found in other parts of Maine\, as well as various birds of prey that hunt in the marsh throughout the year. Muskrat\, mink\, otter\, and deer also frequent the wetland. \nWe will meet at the Eastern Road parking area (Eastern Trail trailhead) at 8 am. We welcome birders of all skill levels.
