SUMMARY:Bark: Get to Know Your Trees
DESCRIPTION:The traits typically used to describe trees—leaves\, twigs\, and buds—are often hard to see or seasonally absent. Join Michael Wojtech for an exploration of bark\, which is always visible\, in any season. As you hone your perceptive abilities you will learn about a system for identifying tree species by their bark\, and discover why such a variety of bark characteristics exist. Why do some species have smooth bark\, while on others it is thick and broken? Why does bark peel? \nJoin us online via Zoom to learn to identify trees by their bark. Register on the Library's website to attend. You will receive a link to join in your email. \nMichael left a 15-year business career to pursue his love of natural history and writing\, and earned his Master’s in Conservation Biology from Antioch University New England. His thesis\, on tree bark\, became the basis for his field guide\, Bark. Though the book's plant ID section covers trees of the Northeast\, much of the material inside speaks to the characteristics and function of bark anywhere–so it’s fascinating wherever you live.

SUMMARY:Foot Prints and More! Introduction to Wildlife Tracking
DESCRIPTION:Wildlife tracking is a useful skill for photographers\, hunters\, biologists\, conservationists\, and nature enthusiasts who want a deeper connection with wild creatures. It can involve much more than looking down at tracks. Interpreting trail patterns\, scat\, claw marks\, hair snags\, dens\, beds\, feeding sign\, etc. are also useful\, and often more revealing\, and we will touch on all. And\, since seeing is believing\, we’ll watch some videos of animals actually creating the tracks and signs they leave behind. \nJoin us for a Zoom presentation by Janet Pesaturo\, who works to bring broader awareness\, understanding\, and appreciation of our natural world through camera trapping. Click on this link to register and you’ll receive the Zoom link. \nJanet is focused on learning more about animal behavior by strategically placing trail cameras in “great animal spots.” Her goal is to share everything she learns about animals\, animal behavior\, and the techniques used to study them. All this she does through candid\, compelling\, often dramatic photo and video footage and interpretation.

SUMMARY:Birds and Climate Change
DESCRIPTION:Deep Birding: Exploring the Past\, Present\, and Future of Birds in a Rapidly Changing Climate \nFrom large-scale habitat changes associated with European colonization to rapid climate change today\, the birds of North America have faced\, and will face\, dramatically changing habitats across the continent. Examining the past\, present\, and future of our birds\, we will explore why some are adapting\, and some are not. \nSteve HamptonJoin us for a Zoom presentation by Steve Hampton hosted in partnership with the Camden Public Library. Click on this link to register and the Library will send you the Zoom link. \nSteve Hampton is an award-winning writer who integrates stories of Indigenous history\, climate change\, and birds. He is an enrolled citizen of Cherokee Nation and has been birding since he was 7 years old. With a PhD in natural resource economics\, he worked for the California Department of Fish & Wildlife for 25 years\, where he was involved in oil spill response\, seabird restoration\, and coordination with Native communities. He currently serves as the Conservation Chair and CBC compiler for Rainshadow Bird Alliance in Port Townsend. His article in the December 2022 issue of Birding magazine summarized the scientific research on birds and climate change.

SUMMARY:Ecological Gardening 101
DESCRIPTION:Are you a gardener who's big on birds? Curious about caterpillars? A booster for bees? Or are you simply curious as to why everyone is suddenly talking about native plants? Join ecological landscape designer and coach Kelly Corbin\, owner of Living Landscapes Maine\, for "Ecological Gardening 101: How to Create Habitat at Home". We'll delve into why ecological gardening matters\, the critical role these gardens can play\, and the steps you can take to create vibrant habitat for birds\, bees\, and other forms of local wildlife right in your own yard. \nJoin us in-person at the Camden Public Library on November 17 at 6:30 pm. Come with questions! Time for Q&A will be provided. \nKelly Corbin\, owner of Living Landscapes Maine\, offers garden coaching and consulting services so that her clients feel ready to take on the wonderful work of transitioning their yards into functional and beautiful spaces that offer habitat and refuge to all visitors. She is a former science teacher and environmental educator with degrees from The Conway School of Landscape Design and Antioch University New England. Kelly has years of experience communicating the complexities of the New England landscape to a variety of audiences to help people feel more connected to the world around them. She is a firm believer that our gardens\, no matter the size\, can contribute to a healthier\, more resilient world.

SUMMARY:Cashes Ledge: The Yellowstone of the North Atlantic
DESCRIPTION:Cashes Ledge is a 32-mile-long series of underwater mountains in deep 700-800 feet of water in the central Gulf of Maine. Cashes boast the deepest and densest kelp forest on the Eastern Seaboard and an environment abounding in fish and sea life. After diving at Cashes over Ammen Rock\, a peak that sits just 27 feet below the surface at low tide\, globally famous marine researcher Sylvia Earle\, said it was the "The Yellowstone of the North Atlantic.” \nJoin us for an in-person at the Camden Library presentation by Zack Klyver\, marine mammal scientist\, educator\, and conservationist. Zack has visited Cashes numerous times and led several day trips to Cashes Ledge through his company FLUKES where they have seen North Atlantic right whales and numerous species of marine mammals and birds. \nUniversity of Maine marine scientist Dr. Robert Steneck\, who spent years studying the ledge’s benthic habitat describes it as\, "The Lost World”. Ocean researchers have long considered this remote area an oceanic gem. It encompasses the underwater mountain range\, ledges\, ridges\, and surrounding deep water basins. The kelp beds are home to a stunning\, red-colored cod species and exceptional benthic life. This massive range of ledges creates upwellings of cold nutrient-rich water that fuel an explosion of plankton\, that feed herring\, squid\, and mackerel\, who in turn are prey for tuna\, sharks\, seabirds\, and a high diversity of marine mammals. \nOn July 29th\, 2024\, the Conservation Law Foundation (CLF) submitted the nomination for Cashes Ledge to be a National Marine Sanctuary. The nomination was submitted to the Sanctuaries program for National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and would protect a 766-square-mile protected site encompassing Cashes Ledge\, Parker Ridge\, and Sigsbee Ridge.
