SUMMARY:Field Trip: Green Point Wildlife Area\, Dresden
DESCRIPTION:A former orchard and farm\, Green Point Wildlife Management Area in Dresden sits at the confluence of the Eastern and Kennebec Rivers. This midcoast birding hotspot hosts a variety of habitats including hayfields and an old orchard\, riverside floodplain forest\, wetlands\, and pine grove. We expect to see a wide variety of birds on this field trip such as Yellow-rumped Warblers\, Palm Warblers\, and Ruby-crowned Kinglets\, a variety of sparrows\, plus thrushes\, blackbirds and waterfowl. We recommend sturdy shoes and long pants\, and some blaze orange for this outing. \nBecause parking is very limited at the wildlife area\, we strongly recommend carpooling.  \nDirections: On Route 128 (aka River Road) in Dresden\, .8 mile north of the intersection of Indian Road and Route 128. There are two parking lots for Green Point. Please park at the MDIFW maintenance building (large green building with a white door and roof) on the west side of road (coordinates: 44.05753\, -69.77290). \nThis trip will be led by Will Broussard and Alan Phipps. DESCRIPTION:Deep Birding: Exploring the Past\, Present\, and Future of Birds in a Rapidly Changing Climate \nFrom large-scale habitat changes associated with European colonization to rapid climate change today\, the birds of North America have faced\, and will face\, dramatically changing habitats across the continent. Examining the past\, present\, and future of our birds\, we will explore why some are adapting\, and some are not.  \nSteve HamptonJoin us for a Zoom presentation by Steve Hampton hosted in partnership with the Camden Public Library. Click on this link to register and the Library will send you the Zoom link. \nSteve Hampton is an award-winning writer who integrates stories of Indigenous history\, climate change\, and birds. He is an enrolled citizen of Cherokee Nation and has been birding since he was 7 years old. With a PhD in natural resource economics\, he worked for the California Department of Fish & Wildlife for 25 years\, where he was involved in oil spill response\, seabird restoration\, and coordination with Native communities. He currently serves as the Conservation Chair and CBC compiler for Rainshadow Bird Alliance in Port Townsend. His article in the December 2022 issue of Birding magazine summarized the scientific research on birds and climate change.

SUMMARY:Field Trip: Sabattus Pond
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a visit to Sabattus Pond as we look over the extensive flocks of south-bound ducks. Sabattus Pond is remarkable in autumn when water levels draw down\, exposing extensive mud flats and attracting large concentrations of migrating waterfowl. From October until freeze-up\, regulars include Mallards\, American Black Ducks\, Ruddy Ducks\, Hooded Mergansers\, Common Goldeneye\, Green-winged Teals\, American Wigeons\, Northern Pintails\, Ring-necked Ducks\, both species of scaup\, and American Coots. We often see some interesting songbirds\, and a few raptors. \nWe'll meet at the boat ramp at the south end at 8 am (524 Sabattus Road\, coordinates: 44.11911° N\, 70.09320° W). We typically stop at several sites around the pond to view the whole pond. Participants should dress warmly. \nThis trip will be led by Will Broussard. This pond attracts a good variety of migrating waterfowl including Ruddy Ducks\, Ringed-neck Ducks\, American Coots\, scaup\, goldeneye\, merganser\, and Buffleheads. Join ecological landscape designer and coach Kelly Corbin\, owner of Living Landscapes Maine\, for "Ecological Gardening 101: How to Create Habitat at Home". We'll delve into why ecological gardening matters\, the critical role these gardens can play\, and the steps you can take to create vibrant habitat for birds\, bees\, and other forms of local wildlife right in your own yard.  \nJoin us in-person at the Camden Public Library on November 17 at 6:30 pm. Come with questions! Time for Q&A will be provided. \nKelly Corbin\, owner of Living Landscapes Maine\, offers garden coaching and consulting services so that her clients feel ready to take on the wonderful work of transitioning their yards into functional and beautiful spaces that offer habitat and refuge to all visitors. She is a former science teacher and environmental educator with degrees from The Conway School of Landscape Design and Antioch University New England.
